Majuli is the world's largest river island situated in Upper Assam. I and Abhishek Saha went there with the aim of filming a documentary in 2013. This place is the centre of Vaishnavism and is naturally rich in cultural heritage. We though that this would be a perfect place to film a documentary. When we got there, we rented a 100cc motorcycle from a local guy and started exploring this place. I was personally moved by the friendly nature of the people of Majuli.
Despite being rich on so many levels, there is a constant fear of soil erosion, this island faces every year. At this pace, Majuli might die in a few years. We knew about this issue before going in there but seeing it with our own eyes and talking to people who have faced hardships, made us realise how fragile things are.
This film was co-produced by me and Abhishek, who works with HT now (www.abhisheksaha.com).
