In California, Licensed Midwives are regulated by the Medical Board. Education and clinical experience is typically gained through a 3-year post secondary midwife education program. Licensed Midwives provide care to healthy women with normal pregnancies. They screen for complications and either consult with a doctor or transfers care if medical assistance is necessary. During labor and birth the midwife monitors the labor progress, advises the mother in her coping, monitors the baby's heart beat (which tells us the baby is not in distress and tolerating labor well), evaluates for complications and transfers the care to a hospital setting, if necessary. Also, in a time critical situation the midwife is the on-sight emergency first responder. After the birth, the care continues in the immediate hours after the birth and with multiple homevisits to assess the mother / baby couplet especially making sure that the breastfeeding is going smoothly.

At California Midwifery Service, Rosanna Davis, provides care in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, specializing is group care: Village Prenatal and Postpartum Care, a group care model of maternity care.
