To specifically targeting metastasis the key cause of lethality in cancer we have identified a cellular marker that reflects metastatic capability just like the way that fire alarm signifies fire. The support from the NIH common fund allowed a screen for chemicals that eliminate the marker assuming that the loss of the marker reflects the loss of metastatic capability much like the stop of the alarm when fires are out. We found a compound metarrestin. It specifically blocks metastasis in three human cancer models including breast prostate and pancreatic cancers with little side effects to treated animals.
