http://bit.ly/ChicagoFireSprinkler - Great video informing people of the importance of having fire sprinklers, that they save lives/property, are affordable, and easy to install narrated by Kevin Casey; a Chicago Sprinkler Fitter Local 281 Retiree, retired Fireman, and in many movies including Back Draft.
Any type of fire is terrible just ask anyone that has been through one, it will leave tragedy and devastation in its wake. They are dangerous and can cause costly amounts of damage to property and personal effects. The worst thing about a residential fire is that they can take a life and no one wants that. It only takes a spark to start a fire and if not extinguished quickly it can spread to more than just the room it is in, but the whole house, apartment, complex, neighborhood and more. It is easy to help protect a residence in by using a fire sprinkler system as they can do so much more than save lives.
Advantages of Sprinklers in High-Rise Apartments
Chicago residents can tell you that fire is devastating especially for people that live in high-rise apartment buildings. Fires in these buildings can spread quickly and without a thought to where it is going, however if a fire sprinkler is used then the fire can be put out even possibly before the fire department arrives. One major advantage that sprinklers possess is that they allow the occupants to escape quickly and safely, which can save their lives. Other great advantages that sprinklers have:
• Protecting Property
• Providing Tax Breaks to High-Rise Owners
• Provide Insurance Savings
• Effective in extinguishing fires in High-Rise apartments
• Offer less water damage than fire hoses
• They pay for themselves over time
• They enhance green initiatives
Property Protection and Insurance Savings with Fire Sprinklers
Sprinkler systems in a residential building will allow protection not only for the building owners property(i.e. the building itself) but the occupants property that are in the building as well. One myth that surrounds fire sprinklers is they can cause a large amount of water damage. This is not true, Fire sprinklers cause less damage than their water hose counterparts. The reason is that sprinklers are working to put out the damage while the fire department is contacted, dispatched and en route, as well as getting set up. Often the fire is out before the fire department arrives and is contained to the room where the fire started. Sprinklers use an average of 8 to 20 gallons of water per minute, were as water hoses us from 50 to 100 gallons or more per minute.
With a non-sprinkler residence, while the fire department is en route the smoke and fire can spread throughout the home causing even more damage. As with a home that has a fire-sprinkler, the fire is contained to the room it started in and smoke and water damage are minimized. Insurance companies will often provide discounts to property owners and residents that have fire sprinklers in their homes. Additionally occupants in High-rise apartments can receive discounts on both common and living unit rooms depending on their insurance. One other thing to remember about fire sprinklers when thinking about damage is they control heat, smoke and flames all at the same time very quickly.
With everyone wanting to "Go Green" nowadays it is reasonable to ask can or are fire sprinklers green? The environment is what allows us to live, we affect the environment and it in turn affects us. Without it we cannot function and to protect it is important. The toxic gasses that fires put out affect our environment, buildings that do not have fire sprinklers cause toxic runoff of dirty water, as well as the smoke or water damaged materials that usually wind up in a landfill.
However, if an automatic fire sprinkler is used then these negative effects on the environment are significantly reduced. The amount of materials that have to be used to repair any damage is greatly reduced compared to a residence that does not have sprinklers in it. Sprinklers also reduced the amount of water that is taken from the environment to control and extinguish fires as well by as much as 50 percent. They also reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses that are released into the atmosphere by up to 98% or more.
With all this information, it stands to reason that anyone living in a high-rise building without a fire sprinkler system would be worried, and petition the owner and manager to have one put in. Fire sprinklers save lives and as Chicagoans can attest to this has happened on more than one occasion since they started being installed in high-rises.
