Sept. 9, 11:15 a.m. EDT
Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center and charged into the midday Florida sky on a mission to boost power on the International Space Station. The launch was on time, with liftoff at 11:15 a.m. EDT. Over the 11-day mission, the six-member crew will perform three spacewalks to install the P3/P4 integrated truss and solar arrays on the station, doubling the current power generating capability of the orbiting outpost.

Atlantis Heads for Station

The shuttle Atlantis is in orbit, headed for a challenging new phase in the construction of the International Space Station.

Commander Brent Jett and his five crewmates will install a new 17-ton segment of the station's truss backbone, adding a new set of giant solar panels and batteries to the complex. Three spacewalks are planned.

Never again will mankind be able to co-ordinate such an endeavor thanks to capitalism which has now been spread globally. The space program is far to "socialist". Perhaps one day one of the multi-nationals will find space travel profitable or maybe "socialist" China will take the reigns for future space flight. We are moving backward as a species. Oh well. Fuck it. Get me a beer.

Too bad we've lost our vision to timid souls; glade they didn't keep the first explorers on the shores centuries ago.

Whenever I see these videos I most impressed by the power propulsion searched and used in these devices. They are monstrous! All for something so simple but so powerful that it is gravity. Sometimes I think God does not want us to come out of the earth.

Having been to STS131 and STS132, I can't believe I just now started going to launches... wow!
