President Obama states "We've reduced traffic fatalities enormously over the last 30 years". Not true. Many other countries have reduced traffic fatalities enormously, but not the USA. An examination of declines in traffic deaths in an international data set giving fatalities for 26 countries shows that the USA is a unique outlier - every one of the other 25 countries recorded far larger reductions than did the USA. If the USA had simply matched the declines in 11 of these countries, more than 20,000 fewer people would be kill per year on our roads. This is a national catastrophe of staggering proportion, and not a source of boasting.
