ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI (1660-1725)

"Stabat Mater" for soprano, alto strings and basso continuo

1. "Stabat Mater dolorosa" - Adagio [a due]

2. "Cujus animam gementen" - Moderato e dolce

3. "O quam tristis" - Poco andante [alto solo]

Performed by Concerto Italiano
Featuring Gemma Bertagnolli, soprano
Sara Mingardo, contralto
Conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini

*Scarlatti's "Stabat Mater" was composed for the Cavalieri della Virgine dei Dolori in Naples, who, annually, honored the Virgin by dedicating to her, during the Lenten season, a Stabat Mater. 20 Years later the same Order commissioned Pergolesi for a new Stabat Mater to replace Scarlatti's in part because his Stabat Mater was considered old-fashioned.
