Steps: 1. Open VLC, then go to: Media --- Convert / Save 2. In the file tab 'Add' the video you want to convert. If it is a DVD then go to the 'Disc' tab and select. (Sometimes DVDs with copy-protection won't work.) 3. Click 'Convert / Save' 4. Set destination folder. Make sure you include the video, so if you were converting an AVI file to a MKV file, save it as: ......Desktop\video.mkv 5. Under 'Settings' go to the crossed tools icon which will open up settings. 6. For encapsulation, choose one. This is your format or container. 7. Under video codec you can choose bitrate, codec, etc. for the video stream 8. Under audio codec you can choose bitrate, codec, etc. for the audio stream 9. The click 'Save'. 10. Click 'start'. VLC will start converting this video now. Wait until the slider moves to the other side, or in the bottom right hand corner it should say '2: 00/4: 55" which means it has done 2 minutes out of 4 minutes 55 seconds.
