Remember how Mario 64 didn't really have that much filler? There's the three Toad stars that you get with no effort, and the second MIPS star (and arguably the second Princess's Slide star) are kind of filler-y, but none of the other ones really were. Some were insultingly easy to get, but those were generally the "introduction to the level" stars. And there's 100-coin stars, but I've always sort of enjoyed those.

Then Mario Sunshine came along and added blue coins. I wouldn't have minded those so much if most of them were laying around in hard-to-reach places or were found by squirting things that drastically stand out, but as we all know, that was not the case.

With Mario Galaxy, there's more levels than before (well, there's 15 "big" ones, just like in Mario 64, but there's a lot more minilevels), and a fair number of them send you through totally different routes to get the main stars. But they had to run out of creativity eventually, and so comets were added to make you redo missions you already did with some sort of extra challenge. These ranged from boring to "meh" to actually quite difficult. And then of course there's the purple coin comets, which, again, were quite varied. They're arguably more interesting than the 100-coin stars from the other games, at least.

Galaxy 2 ... I don't even know. Maybe I'm just seeing (and complaining about) something that doesn't exist, but I swear that nearly all the comets in this game are incredibly boring, and the ones that do provide a challenge are just really irritating. It might be because the game has more levels than the first Galaxy, and all the minilevels also get comets in this one (except the ones that get other random challenges, like the bird races). Some day I'll have to actually count up all the stars in this game and determine how many of them are uninspired filler missions.
