Blending a Better Blood Orange Juice

In this video I will show how to blend a better orange juice using multiple varieties of pigmented citrus fruit. Commercial orange juices are typically blended to make a consistently flavored product. A gardener who grows citrus fruit at home can blend juices of different varieties together to make better orange juice.

The first fruit shown is a Spanish variety of blood orange called Sanguinelli. It is pigmented by anthocyanin, the same pigments present in blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.

The second fruit shown is an Italian variety called Vaniglia Sanguigno or Vanilla blood orange. Its color comes from a pigment called lycopene which is also found in tomatoes and watermelons.

The third fruit shown is the Variegated Pink Eureka Lemon, a natural mutation of the Eureka Lemon discovered in California in the 1930s.
