this is the first in our series of historical recordings from ambient looping duo "bindlestiff", who worked as a group from 1992 - 1995, and made further recordings, at a distance, during 1996 - 1997.

this particular medley is comprised of three classic bindlestiff tracks, in this case, all taken from the 1995 pureambient album "quiet", which is available for download from the pureambient store.

note: this particular medley, as with all pureambient videos from bindlestiff or any of our artists, should be enjoyed through headphones for maximum stereo effect and enjoyment.

these three tracks were especially selected firstly; because they are all quite ambient, and secondly; because they all feature energy bow guitar, which was one of the band's signature sounds in both live performance and in the studio. this then, is the "ambient" medley.

bindlestiff was:

bryan helm: synthesizer, synth bass, drum machine, loops, electric & acoustic guitars

dave stafford: energy bow guitar, electric & acoustic guitars, loops, synthesizer

the band looped in real time without benefit of MIDI or any kind of sync, each creating independently, loops that would work together to support what was required. this "double loop" technique was and still is somewhat unusual, this allows two people to sound like a much, much larger band, and enables both players to "solo" or improvise melodies over the running loops - which were often altered and mutated and treated with effects as they were running. almost all bindlestiff recordings, whether they are "studio" or "live", are actually live with absolutely no overdubs. these three tracks are no exception - all three were recorded entirely "live" in the studio, by just two people, live to analog four track 1/4 inch reel to reel, a stereo pair for each musician. the two stereo pairs - four tracks total - were then mixed down to a single stereo master, which is what you are hearing in this video.

since there is no video of bindlestiff in existence, and, since bindlestiff tended to work with more long-form ambient pieces of music, we've decided to create some longer-form videos which makes more sense sonically and visually. rather than create one video for each song, this allows us to present medleys of two or more pieces, which is more indicative of what the band actually sounded like when performing live. this is the first of the initial three medleys planned for the brand new bindlestiffHD channel, and we are very, very proud to "re-present" one of the best ambient bands of the 90s, here in the 10s, via the medium of video.

all three audio tracks recorded live in the studio, july 1995, during the sessions for the "quiet" CD.
