Virtua Racing was released for the Sega Saturn in 1995 with the game being developed and handled by Time Warner Interactive. This Saturn version includes a total of 10 tracks as opposed to the three from the arcade original, several vehicles to race with and a number of modes including Arcade, Grand Prix and Practice.
The gameplay is very enjoyable and controls well on the Saturn's standard pad while music and sound effects are decent. Perhaps the most damning aspect to the game though is that it lacks that Sega arcade feel that is present in the likes of VF2 and Sega Rally on Saturn. Perhaps if Sega had developed and published the game itself things might have being different. Also, from a technical standpoint the framerate isn't as smooth as might be expected.
Virtua Racing on Saturn is by no means a terrible game however and is perhaps a little undeserving of the harsh criticism it generally seems to receive. If you look past the polygonal, texture-less graphics, Virtua Racing is an enjoyable and addictive little racer and worth looking into given its cheap asking price on eBay.
