The steps to wiring a three way switch. This is in the Chicago area. USA.

If you have a light or group of lights that are controlled by 2 wall switches, you have a pair of 3 way switches. A 3 way switch has three screw terminals. One screw will be a dark color and two screws will be a lighter color. There should also be a screw for a ground wire. The lever on the switch will NOT be labeled with ON or OFF.

Before wiring a three way light switch, look at the old switch and mark the wire going to the dark colored screw. The wire going to this common screw needs to be connected to the dark colored screw on the new switch. The wires going to the 2 light colored screws are interchangeable. These are your travelers.

I cover the steps on wiring a three way switch and some tips if you have removed the switches and don't know what wire to connect to which terminal.

Turn off the electric to any circuit that you are working on.
