The 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction takes place from 22-26 May in Cancun, Mexico. In the run-up to this important international event, UNISDR has produced five short films to show how countries are implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in order to make themselves safer and more resilient.

The first video features Global Platform host Mexico and shows how the country is meeting target G of the Sendai Framework, which promotes greater access to multi-hazard early warning systems.

Since its devastating earthquake of 1985, Mexico has established an efficient network of more than 8,200 alert systems spread countrywide that can now alert people about any tremor in less than 60 seconds.

Thanks to this system, exposed populations will have time to be evacuated from buildings, the collapse of which is the main killer when an earthquake strikes.
