Think 150bhp is enough? Then think again... VW has squeezed an extra 30bhp out of its trusty 150bhp 1.8-litre turbo engine, and added another string to the Bora's bow.
But with 180bhp and no chassis modifications, is it all too much for the BMW 3-Series wannabe? The 1.8T sits between the pricier 170bhp V5 and four-wheel-drive 204bhp V6 4Motion, as well as the excellent PD diesel. With an 8.2-second 0-60mph time and a 142mph top speed, this Bora is 0.8 seconds quicker than the PD, but the difference on the road is less obvious.

Sadly, 180bhp is too overwhelming for the front-wheel-drive car - and the chassis often feels stretched. Plant your foot in the carpet in a low gear and the flickering of the traction control warning light is almost inevitable. Corner hard and there's enough grunt available, but you will be crying out for a firmer suspension set-up and crisper steering.

What can't be faulted is the Bora's cruising ability. While vibration comes through the pedals under acceleration, once up to speed, drivers can use sixth gear and settle into a relaxed, smooth ride. Fuel consumption shouldn't break the bank at 32.8mpg, but emissions of 206g/km place the 180 in the 23 per cent company car tax bracket. Go for the 150bhp PD and you'll save a fortune.

The car is available in Sport trim for ΂£18,105 or our ST spec for ΂£16,905 - but the latter's measly standard kit and dreadful two-tone interior do little to give the Bora the sporty feel it deserves.
