The USD 150-175 million Segment K I-49 extension is part of a 30-mile-long project by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. It includes roadway improvements and service roads on the I-49 Bridge. Finley Engineering Group (FINLEY) provided bridge design services for three precast segmental bridges with 120- to 260-foot span lengths. This included 700 segments and roadway cross sections from 31.5 to 52 feet. To streamline precast segment production, FINLEY developed a single segment core that could accommodate the variation in segment widths. The cross sections for three bridges had to be developed concurrently to meet this challenge and optimize segment casting for the entire project. Using the cross-section/post-tensioning generation capabilities of RM Bridge, FINLEY was able to perform the superstructure design of three bridges simultaneously.
