1 cup yellow split peas 2 cups water 1 tsp salt 1 tsp tumeric or curry powder 1 small onion, chopped 1/2 tsp cumin seeds(geera) 1 clove garlic, smashed 1 tbs oil(vegetable, canola)
Place split peas in water and boil for 25-30 minutes until soft and blend with immersion/stick blender to preferred consistency. If they are too thick for you, add a little water to thin it out some.
(Choonkay process): Place garlic clove and 1/2 tsp of cumin into small pot or in a ladle(BE CAREFUL!!!!!), Heat vegetable or canola oil and once garlic is golden brown and cumin is toasted(not burnt), add the infused oil to the pot of dhal to finish the dish.
Eat with curry, roti or plain ol' white rice, enjoy.
