On October 21, 2012 at approximately midnight, a women was reported overboard on the Carnival Destiny cruise ship. The ship turned around to try to go back to where they thought she went overboard. Before the lifeboats were lowered to complete the search and rescue, a lit life preserver was thrown into the water in hope that she would see it and swim to it.
However, she did not. At approximately two a.m, two hours after the woman was reported missing, the rescue boat miraculously pulled her from the pitch black waters. It was a miracle in itself that the cruise ship was able to go back and find her. My mother and some other passengers witnessed the woman yelling for help from their balconies. However, she could not be seen and only her faint cries for help were heard. The ship was on its way to Jamaica, but because she needed extra medical attention they were re-routed to key west. It is not known how or why the women went overboard, however, there was speculation and rumors amongst passengers that she jumped after a long argument with one of her roommates. It was also rumored that when she jumped (from the seventh deck) that she hit one if the lifeboats beneath her balcony and was seriously injured. It was also not known whether she had a life preserver or not, but passengers were told that she was pulled from the water without one. It is truly amazing that this woman had tread water for over two hours in extremely cold waters while seriously injured.
