Written and directed by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands is completely saturated with his heavily stylized methods. In a hill-topped castle overseeing an urban town below, there once lived a brilliant but recluse inventor (Vincent Price). Out of a desire for companionship and possibly love, he creates his most elaborate invention yet; a humanoid being that can think and feel whom he names Edward (Johnny Depp). Incomplete in design, Edward is given a set of scissor-like extremities as a temporary alternative for hands. Unfortunately for Edward, his creator dies before fitting him with ordinary hands. Time passes and wears greatly on the castle but Edward is left alone, nobody aware of his existence. The town below is profoundly themed, being comically accentuated to look and feel as close to cliche suburbanite life as possible. All the houses are of similar appearance other than the fact they each are painted a different but bright color. Even the vehicles are identical but painted differently to match their owner's home. Each morning all the husbands leave at the same time for work, and each evening at the same time they all return. The time between is filled with the gossiping and intermeddling ways of bored suburbanite housewives. Observe as this entirely unique entity is introduced into this completely different but generic atmosphere. Another great movie by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands is impressively stylized while being dark and vivacious simultaneously.
