On Dec. 20, 2012, SR 99 Tunnel Project leaders gathered in Osaka, Japan to witness testing of the world's largest-diameter tunnel boring machine. Named Bertha, the five-story-tall machine will be shipped to Seattle to dig the tunnel that will replace the waterfront section of the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct. Tunneling is scheduled to start in summer 2013. The SR 99 tunnel will open to traffic in late 2015. Follow Bertha on Twitter, @BerthaDigsSR99 and visit www.alaskanwayviaduct.org to learn more about how the Washington State Department of Transportation is tunneling toward a new SR 99 corridor.
