Dió-genes Abréu reads from his collection of poetry at the Dominican Studies Association 2010 Conference held at Naugatuck Valley Community College. (May 13, 2010)

Dió-genes Abréu is a poet, writer, painter, and actor. Born in Miches, Dominican Republic, he now lives in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. His art has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Soho, New York City, and the Metropolitan Museum in Tokyo, Japan. His play, La Huelga, was showcased at Sheppard Hall at City College. Abréu has taught painting and artistic drawing at City College as well as photography at the Family Lfe Center at John Jay College. He has published two books of poetry, Poemas para los vivos (1983) AND Para Mujeres sin Maquillaje (1985), and three non-fiction works, Perejil, el Ocaso de la Hispanidad Dominicana (2004); A Pesar del Naufragio, Violencia Domestica y el Ejercicio del Poder (2005); and Enganitas, discurso y practica social (2007). Abréu earned a Master of Arts from The City College of New York.
