At the time of her maiden voyage, Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world. Her length overall was 882 feet 9 inches and the height, from the water line to the highest of her 9 decks, was 59 feet.

There were 421 men and women assigned to the Victualling Department on the Titanic. Of those, 322 were stewards who performed various functions in public rooms, recreational facilities and cabins.

Most were billeted on E deck along a busy corridor nicknamed Scotland Road, no doubt reflecting the constant hustle and bustle of its Liverpool namesake.

Many passengers would be confused by the maze-like corridors, and would have to rely on a harassed steward for directions. However, as the majority of the stewards had been taken on only at Southampton, many would themselves have had only a sketchy knowledge of the massive and complex interior of the ship.

It was a huge learning process for even the most experienced crew members, but they no doubt believed that they would feel much more at home on the return journey.
