Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. In some countries, up to 7 in 10 women will be beaten, raped, abused or mutilated in their lifetimes.

"A promise is A Promise" is the theme of the Official Commemoration of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is a call from the United Nations to Governments and leaders to translate international promises into concrete action in their countries.

International and regional legal instruments have outlined the obligations of States to prevent, eradicate and punish violence against women and girls.

However, the numbers on violence against women and girls worldwide demonstrate that this gross human rights violation is yet to be tackled with political commitment, action and resources.

Events on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and this video were organized and produced by the United Nations Secretary-General's campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.
