Music Sunday, 3 May, 2009
North Shore Unitaran Church

The North Shore Unitarian Church Choir and Orchestra, under the direction of Wayland Rogers, Music Director, sang the Mass No. 2 in G major by Franz Schubert at its annual Music Sunday presentation. Composed in less than a week's time in 1815, it is the most popular of the 5 masses that he penned. He was only 18 years old at the time. Written for performance in his small parish church of Lichtenthal, Austria, its elegance and beauty will find a "gemutlich" home in the NSUC beautiful Sanctuary.

Schubert was not an orthodox Catholic. His personal piety had its roots in Josephism, a liberal religious attitude prevalent under Emperor Joseph II. It caused him to omit certain words from the Credo section from his setting.

The 6 pieces performed were:
Kyrie Eleison
Gloria in Excelsis Deo
Agnus Dei
