The award winning television drama series RAMSES (4 x 50’00”) portrays the rise and fall of the immense popular Dutch singer and actor Ramses Shaffy in the late fifties till the end of the seventies.
Ramses Shaffy had an incredible urge to live and did this in a grand and compelling way. RAMSES (2014) shows three sides of the fascinating life of Shaffy; the way his rock and roll lifestyle inspired many people and on the other side how destructive it was for some of them. The series and his songs also show his heartbreaking loneliness.
RAMSES is also about twenty tumultuous years in Amsterdam: the rising of the Flower Power, free sex, drugs and the changing moral after the fifties. These are the years that Ramses Shaffy wins his audience, lives with his lover and famous actor Joop Admiraal, meets singer Liesbeth List and starts Shaffy Chantant.
This series, directed by Michiel van Erp, won the ‘Silver Nipkow Disk 2014’, a prestigious Dutch television award chosen by Dutch film- and television critics, it won the ‘Prix Europa 2014’ for the ‘Best European TV Fiction Serial Or Mini-series’, the prestigious Dutch ‘Gouden Kalf 2014’ for best leading role. Furthermore, in 2015 the series has been awarded by ‘De TV Beelden’ for best drama series and the best leading- and supporting role.
And last November 23th, 2015, RAMSES' main character Maarten Heijmans won an International Emmy Award for his role as 'Ramses'!
