The Richter magnitude is generally considered to be the most important measure of an earthquake's strength, but ACCELERATION is actually a more important indicator of the dangers a quake poses to people, buildings, bridges and other structures. We use a low-cost, programmable shake table as we design and test a magnitude 4 earthquake which is more dangerous than a magnitude 5 quake.
