Tom Rosenstiel is the founder and director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism in the Pew Research Center. A journalist himself for over 30 years, Rosenstiel is also the author of 5 books. One of them is The Elements of Journalism, written with Bill Kovach, which was hailed by Roy Clark of The Poynter Institute as "the most important book on the relationship of journalism and democracy published in the last 50 years."

Dec.7, Tom Rosenstiel talked to journalism students at Stanford on his latest thinking on the functions of journalism.
