This is a demonstration of the "Exploding Can" experiment. An empty coffee tin has a hole in the top and bottom. The can is filled with methane from the gas tap and then ignited. The flame begins large and orange. As the gas is burnt and air is drawn into the bottom, the flame becomes smaller and bluer. Eventually, the critical mixture of methane and oxygen is achieved and all the remaining methane burns in an explosion which blows the lid off the tin.
