Now in its second year, the fortnight is a period of two weeks of prayer, education and action dedicated to the protection of religious freedom in the United States and around the world.
The fifteen days started on June 21, 2013 on the feast of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, two martyrs who accepted death rather than violation of their consciences, and ends on July 4, Independence Day.
The 2-week religious freedom campaign was established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to the growing number of threats to religious freedom in the USA.
Among the most prominent of these threats is the HHS mandate requiring employers to provide health insurance to cover contraception, sterilization and some drugs that can cause early abortions.
The mandate will take effect for many Catholics employers and other religions who object this mandate.
