Whilst "hygiene factors" (e.g. work conditions, pay, job security) may contribute to dissatisfaction, they are not the source of motivation and high performance at work. Much better to view them as things you 'pass on the way' when approaching the new pyramid! The expanded 'Maslow Motivation Model' takes account of recent research - all long after Maslow (1943).
