On May 24, 2012, the lower bow unit of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was lifted into the dry dock, a major milestone in the ship's construction. Lifted by "Big Blue", the largest crane in the United States, the 680-metric-ton unit is lowered by the crane and positioned perfectly where it is welded to the ship's hull.
