Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a challenge for our society. Renewable energy sources like wind turbines and photovoltaics play an important part in any future scenarios. However renewables are volatile. With an increasing share of energy from renewable sources an intelligent management of energy demand is required. Energy consumption has to follow energy generation and not vice versa as it is the Status Quo in the industrialized countries today. The EU FP7 research project SmartCoDe will enables intelligent management of energy consuming appliances in the local environment with top priority on security and privacy. It further includes local renewable energy generation and its forecasting into the energy management. Together with the balancing of local energy consumption this will help to release stochastic stress from the electricity grid. The outcome of the SmartCoDe project will enable energy management in small buildings and neighbourhoods -- at very little additional cost -- and will lay the foundation for future fully integrated microchips that provide all functionality that is expected by consumers.
