"I wrote this song in response to the U.S. invasion of Iraq on March 19, 2003. I sang it on the streets of San Fancisco on March 20th, when 20,000 citizens demonstrated their protest by shutting the city down. It inspired the title of my book, Loyal to the Sky: Notes from an Activist. As I write in the book, I could not stop the war, the horrifying violence and injustice of it, but I could offer this song--my anthem to my country, which is without borders; my paean to my people, who are without tribe".

Loyal to the Sky lyrics:

I smell oil
I smell oil
I smell oil

In the name of flesh
In the name of blood
I will fight against this war
Because Im loyal

Because I am loyal to the rivers
Loyal to the sky
Loyal to this earth
And the stars swinging by

Loyal to what we share
to the love that brings us here

And I will not defy
The cries
Of sisters and brothers close by
I will not ignore
The calls
Of mothers and children
Beyond the shores

Of words broken with shame
At bloodshot justice invoked in my name
Freedom gagged, she has been tamed
And fear her dues has claimed

But almighty dollar, we've got your game

I will not be blind
I will not be blinded
We the people stand
We the people rise
I will not be mute
I will not be muted
We the people stand
We the people rise
