Cutting hair, building shelter, cleaning, preparing food, translating. Meet the European volunteers helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos by filling the gaps left by government and NGOs.

Tens of thousands of refugees are waiting on the island for passage to Athens from where most intend to travel to central Europe. Border controls in recent days have created a backlog in Austria, Hungary, Serbia and northern Greece. Many are now rerouting through Croatia, where the prime minister has welcomed refugees and assured onward passage.
