At its core, academic research is a journey rooted in discovery and today Andrea Armani is one of its most promising pioneers. An assistant professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Armani leads a 16-person research team to investigate new phenomena in optics, for diverse applications ranging from chemical sensing to chip-based microscopy. This work has led her to co-author more than fifty publications and conference proceedings, and she holds five patents for inventing new types of optical sensors, bio-detection methods, and new materials for increased functionalization of optics technology. In just the last two years, Armani was named one of Technology Review's Top 35 Innovators under the age of 35, and she received the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program New Investigator Award, the NIH New Innovator Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. The unconventional secret of her success? Let her adventuresome students follow their curiosity, and influence the direction of her lab.
