Gigi Amateau is a celebrated author who has a passion in guiding young writers. Her first book for young adults, Claiming Georgia Tate, was published in 2005. Gigi is known for her works: A Certain Strain of Peculiar, a Bank Street College Best Children's Book of the Year, and Chancey of the Maury River, A William Allen White Masters list title. Come August, Come Freedom, her first work of historical fiction, is a 2013 Bank Street College Best Children's Book of the Year and received the Library of Virginia's 2013 People's Choice Fiction Award. Gigi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in urban studies and planning from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
