"The Clown Dances and Dreams" is an interpretative medley based on Bach's Fugue No. 7 (BWV 852) and Prelude/Fugue No. 4 in C# Minor (BWV 849) from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. It is one of 15 Bach classics I've adapted and rethought in my latest solo piano album "FLOW: The Music of J.S. Bach and Tobin Mueller." This particular track has not been mentioned by any of the reveiwers yet, so I consider it kind of an orphaned child in need of special attention. There is a duel sense of frivolity and introspection in this piece. The title is meant to imply both exploration and self-abandonment, finding a way forward while being swept away by internal forces outside one's control. Although the images don't directly correspond to what I was imagining when playing, they lend a nostalgic visual layer. Feel free to listen with your eyes closed, however, to know the exact moment the clown begins dreaming and what he (or she) does with those dreams...
