Baritone Jonathan Sells performs Dandini's aria 'Come un' ape ne' giorni d'aprile' from Rossini's La Cenerentola. With conductor David Angus and the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra in the Barbican Hall in May 2009. www.jonathansells.co.uk

Come un' ape ne' giorni d'aprile
Va volando leggiera, e scherzosa;
Corre al giglio, poi salta alla rosa,
Dolce un fiore a cercare per sè;
Fra le belle m'aggiro, e rimiro:
Ne ho vedute già tante e poi tante.
Ma non trovo un giudizio, un sembiante,
Un boccon, un boccone squisito per me.
...
Per pietà quelle ciglia abbassate.
Galloppando sen va la ragione
E fra i colpi d'un doppio cannone
Spalancata la breccia è di già.
Vezzosa! Graziosa! Son tutte papà.

(Ma al finir della nostra commedia
Che tragedia qui nascer dovrà!)

TRANSLATION
Like a bee in April days
Goes flying light and playfully;
Runs to the lily, then jumps to the rose,
A sweet flower to find for himself;
I wander around beautiful girls and keep looking:
I've never seen so many and yet more,
But I don't find a face, a likeness,
A mouth perfect for me.
...
For pity's sake, lower your eyes,
My reason is galloping away,
And by the shots of a double cannon
The breach is already blasted wide.
Delightful one! Gracious one! You look just like your dad.

(But at the end of our comedy
What a tragedy will be born!)
