Trolling through pictures from previous trips for my channel page I found this old video of me demonstrating a river crossing technique and testing the suitability and waterproofing of equipment we had purchased for use by scouts.
I like practicing river crossings, and the full pack swim remains my personal choice where sufficient slow flowing water is present. (particularly in summer!). Waterproofing your gear is essential, and there are a lot of methods to do so. In this video the equipment in my pack is protected by a commercial dry bag. I once swum down a flooded river for two days on a pack waterproofed with garbage bags and rubber bands. Believe it or not, when done properly this will work and keep your gear (mostly) dry.
