UCC's Department of Physiology is both a member of the Colleges of Medicine & Health and Science, Engineering and Food Science, and has been an independent department since 1907.
The Department teaches in excess of 1,700 students every year across a broad range of scientific and medical courses. Staff of the Department of Physiology make a significant contribution to the teaching on wide variety of degree programmes in the College of Medicine & Health including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Many of the department's academic staff are also Principal Investigators in the Biosciences Research Institute, where much of the departmental research is conducted. A significant proportion of the research activity is also conducted within the Western Gateway Building. All final year Physiology BSc undergraduates also conduct a research project as part of their degree, normally within the Biosciences Research Institute or Western Gateway Building.
