True (and disgusting) story: During World War II the Japanese didn't have enough soybeans to both eat and make soy sauce from. Not making soy sauce was out of the question, so they went to the books and discovered the proteins in soy sauce are also in human hair. A process to extract them from hair was invented and the Japanese people went through the war eating hair-based seasoning.  A couple years ago - about the time of the melamine scandals - we learned the Chinese were still doing this AND were exporting it to Japan. The Japanese were not amused.
