The 90th Cyber Operations Squadron in San Antonio, Texas hosted the Bricks-in-the-Loop (BIL) model at the DEFCON 27 Aviation Village, 9 - 11 August 2019.
BIL is a cyber-physical interface that simulates the industrial control systems (ICS) for the purpose of training Airmen. OpenPLC (www.openplcproject.com) is hosted on virtualized Linux servers. An UniPi Industrial Relay board running OpenPLC acts as a slave device to the virtualized PLCs. The status of the virtualized PLCs is sent to the UniPi which replicates the status of the SCADA on the model.
Two industrial protocols are simulated in this network: Modbus/TCP and DNP3.
In this case, a Modbus/TCP attack is used to disrupt the SCADA network.
00:00 - Recovery of the model from the last attack is occurring. 00:28 - Modbus/TCP attack begins. Observe the HMI in the background to see the changes. 00:31 - Attacker begins tripping breakers for the simulated base. 00:39 - Attacker's script begins closing and tripping breakers at a rapid speed. 00:52 - Attack is stopped. Recovery begins. The "emergency generators" start, and power is restored to the model.
