"Community Cooking Connections" is what they call it. A bunch of teenagers gather on friday nights to prepare a dinner for folks in the Corvallis, Montana area (just a bit south of Missoula, Montana).

Chicken Cordon Bleu is on the menu tonight.

Wendi Fawns appears to be the choreographer, but she is emphatic that the work is done by the kids. Including the bookkeeping.

I tried to find the dirty underbelly of the whole thing. I asked all sorts of questions off camera too. I went back several times and partook of the games at the end. I found no dirt. These kids are honestly doing it purely for the fun of it. A couple of them can meet some sort of community service requirement for school stuff - but they get that easily and then keep coming back. I could not find any examples of kids doing it because they were court ordered, but it sounds like at some point in time there might have been one or two that did. I would think putting a troubled teen in here would really help to get that troubled teen on a better path. Hell, I felt like *I* was on a better path after spending time with these kids.

The reason they agreed to let me video them? They want more people to feed! The've been getting "only" 70 or so each friday night. I'm not sure if I'm gonna be any help in that space.

I'm impressed. Wow. Hell, I feel good every time I watch this thing. I've probably watched it 40 times now and I still find myself grinning at the end.

I suppose this could be looked at as a whole different approach to the city repair stuff. They are bringing their community together. In the winter. As I ponder this, I wonder if these kids are more effective at building community than Mark Lakeman!
