WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY

Footage from my 1/11/09 visit to the 30-year abandoned Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois. We spent close to 6 hours wandering around the mall taking pictures and videos. We did not encounter any homeless/dogs/gangbangers on this visit.

This video is basically a quick tour of the mall as of January 2009. We start at the entrance to Block D, enter Turn Style and walk across the store to the break room on the second floor, head back into Block D into the center atrium, head through City Life into Jewel, then back to the center atrium and head down Block B towards Penney's. Finally we tour both levels of JCPenney.

The name "Abandoned Paradise" comes from a bit of graffiti found inside a Block C store near Hardy Shoes.

Abandoned Paradise was to be released for Grayslake Central High School's film festival on January 13, 2009. The version created for that would have had an awesome intro using pics of Gurnee Mills and Randhurst, trying to get the audience to picture the Mills with no people or stores, then picture that mall abandoned for 30 years. The next segment would be a brief (maybe 5-10 minute) history of the mall, then the scene from the Blues Brothers, and finally the footage of the 1/11 visit. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline by one hour. :-(
