Bernard Giraud, Vice President Sustainability and Shared Value Creation at Danone, discusses the role which companies can play in creating long-term value within the communities where they operate.
As part of Danone's carbon reduction commitment, the company has been investing in carbon offset programmes. Giraud highlights in particular a mangrove planting project being implemented in Senegal. To date, the project has seen 100 million mangrove plants being restored in two years with the support of local communities and organisations.
Giraud argues that these projects are not examples of philanthropy but carefully managed investments to create shared value, boost rural livelihoods and ensure future food security.
