A sensational race came through with new American, NCAA and high school records. Bernard Lagat showed his trademark savvy, controlling the pace from the halfway point. University of Arizona teammates Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu hung close as the trio passed 3000 (7:55) and 4000 (10:33) comfortably. A strong kick brought him home first, setting a U.S. record 13:07.15. Lalang (13:08.28) was rewarded with a collegiate record. Running back in the back, Kenyan native Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, NJ, became the first high school runner to break 14:00, finishing eighth in 13:57.04.
