Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney talk about how they would deal with gender inequality.

When asked by a voter how each candidate intends to rectify gender inequality in the workplace, Obama was quick to recall the Lilly Ledbetter first bill he signed in office, which makes it easier for employees to file equal pay lawsuits.

In an attempt to reopen a wide advantage among women voters that had drastically narrowed since the first debate, Barack Obama sharply criticised Mr Romney for standing alongside Republican congressional leaders in seeking to restrict women's rights to abortion and subsidised contraception.

By contrast Mr Romney stumbled over his claim to have been an equal-opportunity boss as Massachusetts governor, awkwardly saying that he had redressed a gender imbalance by bringing in "binders full of women" to the state house.
