As a California assemblyman, Sieroty was instrumental in introducing coastal protection legislation in the 1970, 1971 & 1972 legislative sessions. Though the legislation failed to pass, the bills Sieroty sponsored evolved to become Proposition 20, passed by the voters in 1972. Sieroty hired the young Peter Douglas to help draft legislation. Douglas later served 25 years as executive director of the California Coastal Commission.
