In the distant future, Earth was destroyed and left as a barren wasteland. A solitude scientist with the foresight to see the impending disaster escaped the rest of humanity's sudden death on a small orbiting space station.
With no other human left alive, leaving enough resources on the station for him to live out the rest of his life there, the scientist began to build an android that would serve as humanity's legacy. The construction of the android's body was easy enough, but he struggled to install an artificial intelligence that would be able to comprehend the overwhelming knowledge and purpose of all humanity.
Months passed with failure after failure. No matter how much he modified his AI program, Setup.exe, the program's start sequence would always malfunction. From a logical, scientific standpoint, everything should have worked, but the android simply couldn't handle the program.
Then, one day, without realizing it, the scientist made a breakthrough. With the loneliness of his solitude and terminal existence becoming overwhelming with each passing day, he stopped viewing the android as another one of his scientific projects, but as the embodiment of all his hope, dreams, and love. With his motivation driven by caring emotion rather than cold logic, he began modifying the AI program in ways he never would have thought of before.
Within a few short days, the miracle he had been looking for happened: Setup.exe successfully initiated, and the android, whom he named "Miku," began to express awareness, emotion, and personality unprecedented for any AI program previously developed.
The scientist moved onto the next phase of his project, teaching Miku about her purpose as a conscious container of all humanity's knowledge and accomplishments. He completed a pod that would propel Miku deep into space, with the hope that if any alien intelligent life discovered her, she could teach them of the accomplishments and fate of humanity. Miku rapidly downloaded and processed millennia of knowledge, research, and memories, giving her an understanding of humanity's past.
As time passed, and the day of Miku's departure grew nearer with excitement and anxiety, the scientist became attached to Miku's loving and hopeful personality, even though he knew he was her mortal creator, and his impending solitude death drew closer each day. Not knowing how to handle these emotions, he ignored them and pushed on with the completion of his mission.
At last, all was ready, and the day of Miku's departure arrived. Cheerful as always, Miku thanked her creator and joyfully waved him goodbye. However, as soon as the pod's hatch closed, both Miku and the scientist were overcome with unexpected emotion, each suddenly realizing that they would never see each other again. Rejecting logic, the scientist sacrificed the lonely life of a slow death remaining for him and choose to be with Miku, the one he loved, for the rest of eternity.
The pod launched, instantly venting all the air and leaving the scientist to die in Miku's arms.
This final action by the scientist taught Miku of the true power of human emotion. Demonstrating creative powers, a sub-program wrote itself and initiated within Miku's AI: "Melody.exe". Drawing upon the memories and emotions of all humanity, Miku sang to her creator, thanking him for his sacrifice and love.
Melody.exe consumed most of Miku's energy, almost causing the overwhelming deletion of all Miku's memory, requiring Miku to enter a dormant state, which she will wake up from on an "unconfirmed date." Gazing upon the peaceful body of her maker, Miku says "Goodbye" one last time, then enters an eternal sleep with him as they quietly travel into the deepest reaches of the universe.
