Caralee Dunbabin of Shear Technology explains how Rockwell Hardness applies to Japanese and German steels in hair cutting shears. Rockwell Hardness is not as relevant to Japanese steels as it is to harder German steels. Japanese steel has components like vanadium and titanium that add tensile strength but add flexibility and take away weight. Rockwell hardness is not the most relevant way to gage steel quality. The most relevant way is to determine the alloy composition of the steel.
